When Champlin Park handed defending Class 3A state champion Lakeville North its first loss of the 2018 season in September, it relied on Izzy Ashburn and her 30 assists to set up players like Emma Schmidt and other Rebels built for a long run into the postseason.
Ashburn, Schmidt and Champlin Park took the 2018 state title on Nov. 10 — the school's first ever — with a five-set win against Eagan, showcasing the Rebels' talent. Ashburn, who finished the regular season with a state-leading 904 assists, Schmidt, and teammate Kaitylyn Weimerskirch were named first team selections, along with 11 other Class 3A players.
The list of all-state players, compiled by the state's coaches association, spotlights some of the best talent in Classes 1A, 2A and 3A. Players are nominated by coaches and voted on by a selection committee.
Lakeville North senior standout and Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year Elizabeth Juhnke was also named to the list. Juhnke's 481 kills through the section playoffs were the state's best.

Kasson-Mantorville, which lost to eventual Class 2A state champion North Branch 3-2 in a tourney semifinal, was led by seniors Peyton Suess, an outside hitter, and libero Bailey Berge. The KoMets' duo join Concordia Academy as the only programs in Class 2A with more than one all-state player.
Class 1A state title-winning Minneota boasts two players — Ms. Baden Volleyball finalist Lydia Sussner and Morgan Kockelman — on the first team list and one — Lizzy Gillingham — named as an honorable mention. Mayer Lutheran, a regular Class 1A volleyball powerhouse, had two juniors named to the first team.
