Panthers defend Bachman title

North claims championship with two three-set wins

LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- Second-ranked Lakeville North claimed its second consecutive Bachman Invitational title, earning the crown with three-set wins over Class AA No. 1 Stewartville and Class AAA No. 4 Lakeville South in the final two matches.

The Panthers made quick work of the Warriors behind a total team effort, led by Amelia Wherland, who set a career-high with a .758 setting percentage, while the team hit .689 in Friday's opener.

Leading the attack up front was Elizabeth Juhnke, who set a career high with a .700 hitting percentage with 15 kills.

The Panther middles were equally effective with Tori Thompson and Abbey Milner combining for 11 kills and a .733 hitting percentage without an error.

Defensively, North dug 27 of the 37 attacks Caledonia put in play. Nine of the Panthers' 11 players record a dig with Ella Wheatcraft leading the way with six.


Amelia Wherland had 25 of 33 set attempts result in kills for a career-best .758 setting percentage.



Izzy Fuerst had a career-high nine digs and led both teams in digs and aces (3).

#2AAA Lakeville North def. Cretin-Derham Hall, 25-17, 25-7

The Panthers dispatched their second consecutive opponent in 35 minutes.

North had a 10-point lead in the opening set before a 5-1 run got the Raiders to within six points at 22-16 but, after putting the first frame away, the Panthers took a 7-0 lead on Tori Thompson's service in the second set and never looked back.

North was again stellar defensively, limiting Cretin-Derham Hall to an .021 hitting percentage, with 28 digs on 41 in-play attacks. Izzy Fuerst led the way with nine digs while Abbey Milner, hit .500 with six kills, had three blocks.

Milner and Thompson both had six kills while Juhnke had 10. After hitting just .161 in the opening set, the Panthers had 16 kills and a .500 percentage in the second set.


#2AAA Lakeville North def. Jackson County Central, 25-18, 25-17

Saturday morning saw the Panthers put together another balanced attack in putting away the Huskies.

Juhnke, Thompson and Milner combined for 17 kills while Maddy Hornyak had three kills in the first set and Bailey Leeke had a pair of kills in the second set.

Halle Wolfe had seven digs, two aces and passed seven serves without an error to anchor North's back row.

#2AAA Lakeville North def. #1AA Stewartville, 25-13, 23-25, 15-5

A second-set, which featured 15 tie scores and 10 lead changes, set up a third set in which North dominated Stewartville to move onto the title match.

The Panthers controlled the first set after playing to a 3-3 tie to open the match. A 9-2 forced a timeout by the Tigers and the hosts never looked back.

The second set was a different story. The largest lead of the set was a three-point advantage by Stewartville at 17-14, but North went on a four-point run to take an 18-17 lead.

The Panthers held a 21-19 lead before the Tigers finished with a 6-2 run to send the match to a third set.

Fuerst and Thompson served North to an 11-1 lead and Juhnke had nine kills among the Panthers' final 15 points.

Juhnke finished with 19 kills three aces and a block assist for 22.5 points. She also notched her seventh double-double of the season by adding 11 digs.

Continuing its outstanding defensive play, North had 44 digs with Wolfe recording 13 and Fuerst added nine.


#2AAA Lakeville North def. #4AAA Lakeville South, 22-25, 25-13, 15-10

For the second consecutive year, the Bachman final came down to a battle of Lakeville and, once again, North pulled out a three-set win over South to claim the tournament title.

The match opened with a Thompson kill but the Cougars quickly took a 3-1 lead which they would not relinquish. Jasmine Mulvihill recorded seven of her 14 kills in the opening frame to help her team take the lead.

North dominated second set, never trailing in a 12-point win which saw the supporting cast of hitters, Thompson, Milner, Maddy Hornyak and Macy Winter, combined for 10 kills and a .417 hitting percentage without an error.

The teams were tied at 3-3 in the final set but the Panthers never fell behind, kept the lead for that point and finished it out with kills by Hornyak and Thompson.

The key for North as being able to side out on 67 percent of South's serves over the final two sets while scoring on 24 of 39 serves during the same time.


Maddy Hornyak made key contributions off the bench with six kills and two blocks.


North wraps up the 2018 regular season with two matches this week, heading into the MEA Weekend.

Tuesday, the Panthers will be looking to secure a share of their second consecutive South Suburban Conference title when they head to Burnsville for a 7 p.m. match.

North return home, Wednesday, for a non-conference match versus Bloomington Jefferson, on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
