The Mahtomedi volleyball team reached another step of a breakout season with a four-set home win Thursday against Tartan.
Mahtomedi's come-from-behind win wrapped up a first place finish in the Metro East Conference as the regular season schedule progressed through the final week.
It was not that long ago that Mahtomedi (20-3, 7-0) had four consecutive seasons with more losses than wins. The turnaround began with 15 wins last fall and a trip to the Class 3A, Section 4 championship game.
Now, a varsity roster with 10 seniors has reached the 20-win mark before the end of this fall's regular season, helping earn a No. 8 ranking in the Class 3A state polls.
A slow start did not stop Mahtomedi from finishing the Metro East Conference schedule undefeated with a 3-1 win against visiting Tartan Thursday.
The Titans’ attack came out firing, leading the entire first set for a 25-20 win. However, the Zephyrs (20-3, 7-0) picked it up, winning the second set 25-17 before hanging on for a 25-22 in a tightly contested third.
From there, Mahtomedi wrapped up the match with a 25-10 win in the fourth set.
Right side hitter Katherine Arnason led the Zephyrs’ attack with 18 kills in the win. Titans (17-13, 6-2) outside hitter Abby Bennis led with 15 kills.
