Pressure? No matter to Wayzata's volleyball team, and even if the players notice it, it only makes them better.

"I actually have a lot of fun when there is a lot of pressure," Jesewitz said.

That pressure to keep winning helped Jesewitz and Wayzata extend its winning streak that started in 2019 to 55 with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-15 victory over Lake Conference rival Minnetonka on Thursday in a season-opener for both teams.

First Report

Wayzata walked away from the 2021 Minnesota high school volleyball season unbeaten in 34 games and carrying its second Class 4A state championship trophy in three seasons.

The Trojans started the 2022 season on the same path, beating Lake Conference foe Minnetonka 25-18, 25-11, 25-15. To those counting, it was Wayzata's 55th consecutive victory following a seven-game winning streak that culminated with the Class 4A state championship in 2019 and a 13-0 record in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.

To Trojans coach Scott Jackson, it's a one-game streak. "Let's let these guys have their own thing," the longtime Wayzata coach said. And that seems fair, as there are no remaining varsity players from the streak's origins and only four who have played over the past two seasons.

Avery Jesewitz, sisters Stella and Olivia Swenson and libero Sophia Johnson were more than enough for a group of newcomers to lean on in the season-opening victory. Minnetonka pushed the Trojans in the first set and led 10-7 before Wayzata responded with an 18-8 run to win the first game.

Minnetonka was the last team to beat Wayzata, winning 2-0 on Oct. 15, 2019, at the St. Michael-Albertville Fall Classic. The Skippers now are also bookends on the Trojans' streak, having lost 3-1 to Wayzata on Oct. 18, 2019, in the final regular-season game of the season.
