North Branch, last year’s Class 2A runner-up, lost the first two sets to Watertown-Mayer by two points each to find itself in a 0-2 hole. The Vikings needed to win the next three sets to advance against a team they swept in the quarterfinals a year ago.

Yes, call this a comeback.

“It’s crazy,” junior Cianna Selbitschka said. “We were down two-nothing, and just one thought in mind was: We’re not ending this game here.”

The No. 4-seeded Vikings defeated No. 5 seed Watertown-Mayer in a tight five-set match, 25-27, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-8 in the Class 2A quarterfinals Thursday.

Watertown-Mayer (24-7) took control and cruised to wins in the first two sets behind efforts from eighth-grade libero Kate Thibault, who had a match-high 38 digs, and sophomore Paige Thibault, who led her team with 20 kills in the match.
