The first set was not going as planned for top-seeded Watertown-Mayer on Saturday afternoon at the Academy of Holy Angels. Down 24-14, it was looking like No. 2 seed Totino-Grace would have a quick opening-set win over the Royals.

But when the Eagles reached game point, the Royals found inspiration. Watertown-Mayer (24-6) fought back going on a 6-0 run before the Eagles (19-11) finished the set to take a 1-0 lead.

That was the turning point for the Royals.

“We were down by so much and the girls said enough is enough,” said Watertown-Mayer coach Andrea Raser. “And we knew that all we need to do was push through this game, battle it out, and then move on from there.”

First Report

Watertown-Mayer stormed back from a 1-0 deficit, winning three consecutive sets to beat Totino-Grace 20-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 in the Class 2A, Section 5 final at Holy Angels on Saturday afternoon.

Totino-Grace (19-11) dominated early in the first set with the Eagles soaring to 24-14 lead. However, the Royals didn’t give up on the game. Watertown-Mayer (24-6) scored six consecutive points, though it fell short of coming back, and lost 25-20. However, that run energized the team for the remainder of the match.

The No. 1-seeded Royals held strong in the second and third sets, and by the third set, Watertown-Mayer began to pull away, as it went on to win 25-16.

Nikki McDonald set up 41 assists in the match. Her primary targets, Paige Thibault and Kylie Hoese, had 17 and 15 kills, respectively.

Elizabeth Holscher had nine digs for the second-seeded Eagles, but Totino-Grace’s defense just couldn’t keep Watertown-Mayer at bay.

With the win, the Royals cemented their place in this year’s state tournament, which will be played at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul beginning on Nov. 8.
