Panthers take down Sabers in South Suburban Conference battle

Juhnke's 36-kill outing paces North's attack in victory over Shakopee.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- Elizabeth Juhnke had career highs with 36 kills and 83 attacks, and led No. 3 Lakeville North past No. 6 Shakopee, 25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-19 in a South Suburban Conference match.

The teams were tied nine times in the opening set but the Panthers snapped a 12-12 tie when freshman Bailey Leeke recorded a kill to give the hosts the lead for good.

After trailing 2-1 in the second set, it took North 14 points before tying the stanza at 15-15, thanks to three consecutive kills by Juhnke, who's next kill tied the set at 16-16, and she put together another trio of kills to give her team an 18-16 lead.

Shakopee then finished the set on a 9-1 run, fueled by the service of Rachel Kilkelly, who served five points to give the Sabres a 23-18 lead.

The Panthers' attack came back in the third set as Tori Thompson and Maddy Hornyak each added three kills to Juhnke's nine and, in the final set, it was Macy Winter contributing five kills as North rolled to the four-set win.

Juhnke contributed to the victory in all facets of the game. She added two assists, two service aces and two block assists, while notching her fourth double-double of the season with 19 kills. She was also 24-for-25 in service reception.

Halle Wolfe thwarted a number of quality attacks by the Sabers, finishing with a career-high 35 digs while going 33-for-34 in service reception.

Winter had 11 kills on the night while Thompson added six and Hornyak five  to back up Juhnke's big night.

Ella Wheatcraft had eight digs and was 11-for-12 in service reception.

With wins over two of the top-six ranked teams in the state, North heads into this weekend's Eagle Invitational at Apple Valley with momentum.

The Panthers open play, Friday, with a 6:15 p.m. game versus Orono and will then face either Stillwater or Prior Lake at 8:45 p.m.

Saturday, they will round out tournament play with two more matches with times and opponents to be determined.
