First Report

Champlin Park coach John Yunker said it wasn’t a particularly clean opening match for the Rebels, but an untrained observer wouldn’t have noticed.

Champlin Park (1-0) opened its season with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of Hopkins in the Breakdown Side Out Classic Saturday at the Lindbergh Center in Hopkins. Three Rebels totaled double-digit kills in the win.

Senior setter Izzy Ashburn had plenty of options, tallying 30 assists. Lauren Clark and Sami Hilley each had 11 kills, while Emma Schmidt totaled 10.

The Rebels, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association, got off to a fast start in the first, leading 18-7. After a lull by the Rebels, the Royals — ranked seventh in Class 3A — went on a late run before Champlin Park stormed back to win 25-15.

The Rebels had more trouble pulling away in the second set, never leading by more than three or four until taking a 17-12 lead. Then they went on a big run to start the third, and led 20-9 before finishing the 25-15 victory.

Anna Erickson led Hopkins (0-2) with seven kills, while Chudear Tut had six. Stella Swenson had 12 assists.
