North claims section title with sweep of Northfield

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Second-ranked Lakeville North won its 12 consecutive match and the Panthers earned their first trip to the Class AAA state tournament since 2012 with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-23 win over Northfield.

The Panthers have won 16 consecutive sets and, during their 12-match winning streak, have won 31 of 32 sets with 11 sweeps.

The championship match was North taking on a Raider team which would not go away.

The final set saw Northfield use a 6-0 run to take a 23-22 lead before back-to-back kills by Elizabeth Juhnke set up match point and Kennedy Brady finished off a set by Amelia Wherland with a line shot on the right side to send the Panthers to state.

Both Juhnke and Brady saved their best for last, recording seven and four kills, respectively, in the final set.

Juhnke had 20 kills on the night, matching her season high, while Brady finished with 11 kills while hitting .450.

Defense played a big role in the Panthers' win over the Raiders. Halle Wolfe had a match-high 17 digs while receiving 22 serves without an error while Macy Winter had 13 digs among the team total of 55.

North also had eight total blocks in the match with Tori Thompson record a solo block and three assists, Juhnke had a solo and two assists and Arianna Barrett had one solo and one assist to lead the front row.

Setters Amanda Burger, with 20, and Wherland, with 18, helped the Panthers to 49 kills and a .274 team hitting percentage.

North now advances to the Class AAA state tournament. Seeds and pairings will be announced Sunday with the Panthers playing in one of four quarterfinal matches, Thursday, Nov. 9, at either 9 or 11 a.m.


Kennedy Brady hit hit .450 and recorded 11 kills to help lead the Panthers to the Section 1AAA title.
