North advances to semifinals with win over Farmington

Top-seeded Panthers move on with sweep of Tigers

LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- Lakeville North had a balanced attack from its hitters and swept its way into the Section 1AAA semifinals with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 win over Farmington.

The second-ranked and top-seeded Panthers got six-plus kills from five different players while the back row had a .933 serve receive percentage, with just three errors in 45 chances.

North seemed to get stronger throughout the match.

In the opening set, the Panthers and Tigers battled through seven ties and five lead changes before a Tori Thompson block got returned serve to North, trailing 10-9, and she followed with back-to-back aces to start off a seven-point run which gave the hosts the lead for good.

The second set saw three ties and three lead changes before Kennedy Brady tied the score at 8-8 with a kill and she served up the next two points and, once again, the Panthers would never trail.

Finally, in the third set, North took the lead early and wore down the guests, going on a four-point run to take a 4-1 lead early.

Brady accounted for 13 points on the night with 10 kills, two aces and two block assists, while Thompson was good for 12.5 points with seven kills, two aces and six total blocks, including one solo.

Elizabeth Juhnke had a 10-kill outing, the 13th time in her last 14 matches, and 22nd time this season, she has reached double-figures in kills, She also added nine digs.

Halle Wolfe led the back row with 10 digs while also passing 24 of 25 serves.

Next up for the Panthers is a Section 1AAA semifinal rematch with Rochester Century, which they defeated in last year's semifinals in four set. The match is slated for 6 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Nov. 1.

The winner will face the winner of Wednesday's 8 p.m. semifinal between third-ranked Lakeville South and Northfield. The championship match will be back at the Mayo Civic Center, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m.


Tori Thompson hit .500 with seven kills and recorded six total blocks.
