Mid-October is when the state's top volleyball teams separate from the pack, when conference champions are crowned, and when section seeding takes on supreme importance.
With that backdrop — and just about 10 days remaining in the regular season — there is an interesting mix of matches in the MN Volleyball Hub’s top matches of the week. The schedule features three probable conference title matches and two potential northwestern Minnesota section finals.
We’re heading to the far northwest for our pick for the Top Game of the Week, as Moorhead, ranked No. 10 in the Class 3A coaches' poll, hosts Bemidji in a match that seems to preview the section final in Class 3A, Section 8 almost every season.
For the past seven years, these programs have alternated section titles, with the Lumberjacks winning in 2011, 2012 and 2014, and the Spuds claiming the title in 2010, 2013 and each of the past two years.
For Moorhead, which plays an independent schedule largely devoid of section teams, this is a key match for section seeding as its first — and only — match within the section (unless they face Willmar in the upcoming Pumpkin Invitational in Moorhead). Bemidji has played just two section opponents, winning both.
