Top-seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo trailed for much of the first set before the Knights came back to win it en route to a 25-21, 25-12, 25-13 victory.

The Knights (33-1) used a 5-0 run to tie the score midway through the first before getting the final five points to take the first set. Then they showed why they’ve only lost one match all season.

Senior Mara Quam showed off her powerful arm with 15 kills, a match high. She added seven digs and an ace. She was just three kills shy of the team total for Holy Angels (27-5).

The Stars took the lead with a strong start in the first set, blocking everything at the net.

The Knights’ only loss this season was on Sept. 17 to Caledonia, which has advanced to the Class 1A semifinals.

Sophomore Peyton Suess led Kasson-Mantorville (22-11) with 21 of the team’s 40 kills in a 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 victory over unseeded Hermantown. Sophomore Bailey Berge contributed a match-best 13 digs for the No. 3 seed KoMets.

Senior Jordyn Thomas and junior Sierra Bolen led the Hawks (27-4) with nine kills apiece. Hermantown made it to the consolation semifinals last season.

No. 2-seeded Maple Lake advanced with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 victory over unseeded Dilworth-Glyndon Felton, finishing up with a back-and-forth third set.

No team won more than two points in a row in the final set, until the Rebels (25-7) went on a 4-0 run for a 21-20 lead.

Then Maple Lake coach Marty Kiebel took a timeout. After the game, he had to rely on his players to recall what he told them during the break.

“I remember I was a little bit fired up,” Kiebel said. “I guess I was just looking for a little bit more energy.”

Junior Amber Klug helped him fill in the blanks in her coach's memory.

“That we should be more excited that we were up by two in the state tournament,” Klug said. “And that we should want to win the third game and get this game over with to really show our fans and show the state tournament what we’re made of.”

Message received.

The Irish (28-3) won the next three points and five of the next six to wrap up the set and the match.

They rolled through the first two sets with a little more ease. Right from the start their passing and serving game was going well, Kiebel said.

“I was impressed the way we were able to settle in,” he said.

Klug had nine kills, 23 assists and nine digs in the match. Senior Morgan Scheiber led the Irish in digs with 21. For the Rebels, senior Faith Anderson led with nine kills.

“We knew it would be a tough match coming in,” Rebels coach Tessa Tysver said. “We knew it was going to be a battle.”
