A key shot in the first set triggered a 3-set victory over Minneota

Southwest Christian swept Minneota 3-0 in the Class A semifinals Friday, but it wasn’t without some drama — albeit, just a little bit of drama.

After dominating Game 1, Southwest Christian trailed 18-15 in the second game. Minneota controlled the ball and the momentum. Then senior hitter Mackenzie Horkey drilled a shot through the Minneota defense. It gave the Stars the serve, and they never looked back.

Southwest Christian finished Game 2 on a 10-1 run, cruised through the third game and advanced to the state championship match for the first time in school history.

“We knew that if it was tied going into Game 3 that we’d have a battle on our hands,” Stars head coach Greg Sayuk said. “The girls played well enough, and we were lucky to get that one in three [games].”

Horkey had 23 kills and served the team’s eight straight points to take over in the second.

“We all stayed calm and did our own parts,” Horkey said. “We fought hard and didn’t back down.”

Sophomore Taylor Reiss had 14 kills for Minneota, which lost in the state semifinals for the second consecutive season.
