In a sea of neon orange, green and pink that made up the Rogers student section, one person held up a sign that read “Repeat History.”

The Royals, who carried a five-game winning streak, a 28-4 record and the No. 6 ranking awarded by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association into the Monticello High School gym on Thursday night, were looking for a victory over St. Michael-Albertville in the Class 4A, Section 8 championship for the second consecutive season.

Though much of the game it appeared history was about to be revised rather than reprised, the Royals escaped with a five-set victory that was in doubt until the final point.

First Report

Rogers earned a second consecutive Class 4A, Section 8 volleyball championship on Thursday night with a five-set victory over St. Michael-Albertville that was anybody's game to win until the very last point.

The Royals, 29-4 and sixth in the final regular-season rankings by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association, survived some wild momentum swings to beat the Knights 19-25, 25-12, 11-25, 25-17, 15-13 at Monticello High School. It was Rogers' second consecutive victory over St. Michael-Albertville in the Section 8 final. The Royals reached the third-place game in the 2021 Class 4A state tournament.

Neither team held a lead of more than two points in the back-and-forth fifth set.

The 10th-ranked Knights ended their season at 20-7.
