East Ridge head coach Steve Anderson knew there was no guarantees heading into the 2022 season. The Raptors learned this lesson throughout what was an injury-riddled season. But Anderson’s team fought through adversity, and now the Raptors are back in the state championship for the second consecutive year.

The Class 4A, Section 3 Championship Game matched up East Ridge and Rosemount. East Ridge finished the season strong as Suburban East conference champions, with a 9-0 record in conference play, despite injuries. Rosemount ended conference play 3-6, but the team turned it around in sectionals.

To get to the final, the Irish battled out a tough 3-2 win over No. 2-seed Eagan, who finished their conference play 9-0. East Ridge made quick work of the earlier sectional rounds, beating both Hastings and Park in three sets. Thanks to an intense offensive show, the Raptors won 3-0 yet again in the final.

First Report

East Ridge (9-0), the Suburban East Conference champions, and Rosemount (3-6) entered the section tournament after two very different seasons in conference play. But after two strong runs through the sectional competition, the two met in the Class 4A, Section 3 Championship Game.

The Raptors didn’t seem to falter on offense and managed to sweep the Irish in front of their home fans. The East Ridge offense was headed by an impressive game from senior Mikayla McDougall. She tallied a match-high 19 kills and popped up in the important moments.

A powerful strike from McDougall ended the second set on a high note for the Raptors. This was the set that East Ridge took control of the match, winning it 25-15.

Despite the three-set win for the Raptors, Rosemount played with passion. They held an early lead for much of the first set and were strong defensively in the third. Estella Garcia, Rosemount’s eighth-grade libero, was strong on that end and registered nine digs on the night.

The Raptors are now looking onto the state championship, where they will try to repeat their Class 4A state final appearance last year.
