The energy in the Lakeville South gymnasium was electric from the moment fans entered.

Students from both schools filled out the bleachers to help their teams finish out their seasons in strong fashion. And those fans got what they came for on the court as leads came and went for both teams.

Lakeville North (18-4, 7-1) came into the contest in high spirits after being ranked second in the Oct. 6 Class 4A coaches’ poll. The Cougars (17-5, 7-1) also got recognition, being ranked sixth and they entered Tuesday night only one game behind their rivals in conference play. So there was good reason for the fans to be on the edge of their seats from the start.

“It made a really big difference,” senior libero Callie Carlson said about the student section. “It got us motivated; it got us hyped. Their energy just gives us good energy.”

First Report

Lakeville South senior Emily Moes is a big play specialist. When the Cougars lost momentum, she would be there to bring it right back. Her leadership was among other great performances that held off Lakeville North 25-14, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21 in the rivalry match of the South Suburban Conference on Tuesday night.

Lakeville South (17-5, 7-1) came into the match ranked sixth in the Oct. 6 Class 4A coaches’ poll, while Lakeville North (18-4, 7-1) was ranked second. The rankings are sure to be shaken up now, thanks to the high-energy performance across the board from the Cougars. They’ve now won five matches in a row before going into their last of the season next Tuesday against Eastview.

With Moes finally back playing 100 percent, according to head coach Steve Willingham, the Cougars have some real punch. She finished with a game-high 18 kills on Tuesday, but also had a solid defensive game with 10 digs. Her performance naturally gave her teammates energy too, especially on defense. Senior libero Callie Carlson led the way for her team with 14 digs, which helped the Cougars stay on top late to seal the win.
