Every volleyball game starts with a serve. For all practical purposes, Rogers also ended its Northwest Suburban Conference game against Andover on Tuesday night with a serve.

The Royals’ 14 service aces, including nine by sophomore Anya Schmidt, put Andover in an early hole in each set and eventually took the Huskies out of the game in a 25-23, 25-12, 25-18 victory. It was the 16th consecutive victory for the Royals, ranked eighth in the latest Class 4A coaches’ poll.

First report

Sophomore Anya Schmidt pointed Rogers in the right direction as the Royals cruised to a 25-23, 25-12, 25-18 victory over Andover in a Northwest Suburban Conference matchup on Tuesday night. The victory was the 16th in a row for the Royals, ranked eighth in the latest Class 4A coaches’ poll.

Schmidt, who is leading the state with 92 service aces this season, had nine of the Royals' 14 service aces in the match. She was first up in Rogers' rotation and got the Royals (19-2, 5-1) an early lead each set. Unranked Andover (13-6, 4-3) was able to catch up a couple of times before Schmidt's turn to serve came around again and Rogers pulled away.

Royals coach Bo Schmidt noted that Anya Schmidt had just under 200 aces last season as a freshman and become one of only six Minnesota high school players with more than 100 in a season. The Minnesota State High School League lists Bemidji's Courtney Bitter’s 171 aces in 2007 as the state record prior to Schmidt’s total last year.

Seniors Hannah Bruskiewicz (12 kills) and Taylor Dawson (11 kills) led the Royals' attack.
