Mahtomedi senior forward Audrey Barry’s speed was on full display Saturday. The senior forward out-raced the Benilde-St. Margaret’s defense three times in the first half, beating the Red Knights defenders to the ball and turning all three into goals as Mahtomedi shocking No. 1-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s 3-1.
It’s the fourth consecutive state tournament title for Mahtomedi. The Zephyrs had won the last three Class 1A championships before moving to Class 2A this season when the MSHSL went to three classes of soccer.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s was undefeated and had given up just five total goals all season prior to Saturday. The Red Knights ended the season 18-1-1.
Mahtomedi, which had lost to Benilde-St. Margret’s 7-0 during the regular season, improved to 17-2-2.
