And the winner is...MN Football Hub defensive top performer revealed

Athletes are considered for the weekly top performer poll only if their stats are entered on the MN Football Hub by 10 a.m. on Sundays. If coaches or members of their staffs need access to enter stats, please email mnhubs@sportngin.com.


Top performer winner

Chase Carter, SMB. After allowing two second quarter touchdowns and falling behind 12-0, the Wolfpack held Fridley scoreless the remainder of the game to allow their offense to come back for a 15-12 win. The Wolfpack’s defense was led by Carter, who tallied five tackles for a loss — 10 tackles total — and two sacks.

Top performer candidates

Benjamin Bowe, Chaska. The senior linebacker led the Hawks’ defense in their 33-12 victory against Bloomington Jefferson on Sept. 2. Bowe recorded nine tackles, including one for a loss. He added two sacks and an interception.

Ke'Andre Brown, Minneapolis Southwest. The Lakers handed St. Paul Highland Park a 37-12 loss in both teams’ season opener. The Lakers were led defensively by Brown, who tallied 19 total tackles, including three for a loss. The senior also scored a defensive touchdown, recovering a fumble and taking it 27 yards for the final score of the first half.

Jackson Cercioglu, St. Thomas Academy. The Cadets held South St. Paul scoreless through the first 42 minutes of their 18-6 win, allowing a single touchdown with just under six minutes remaining in the game. Cercioglu led the Cadets’ defense, making 10 solo tackles and 14 total tackles, including one for a loss.

Zach Dahl, Farmington. The Tigers scored 28 first half points on Sept. 2 en route to a 35-12 victory against Burnsville. Dahl and the Tigers' defense held the Blaze scoreless until mid-way through the third quarter, with the junior linebacker recording nine solo tackles — 11 total — and a sack.

Riley Erkenbrack, Park Christian. The Falcons earned a season-opening win with a 21-12 victory at Kittson County Central on Sept. 3. Erkenbrack led the Falcons defense, as the senior tallied 15 total tackles, including nine solo. He recorded two of those for a loss and also had three sacks.

Joey Gerlach, Woodbury. The Royals held Champlin Park to nine points through three quarters, allowing the Woodbury's offense to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. Leading the defense was Gerlach, who recorded 10 total tackles, forced a fumble, and grabbed an interception as the Royals completed the comeback for a 15-9 victory on Sept. 3.

Jonah Gruenes, Minneota. Gruenes and the Vikings handily defeated Adrian on Sept. 2, recording five touchdowns while holding Adrian scoreless. Defensively, Gruenes recorded 12 total tackles, including two for a loss, to lead the Vikings’ stingy defense in the 35-0 win.

Trevor King, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda. Despite the Coyotes suffering a season-opening loss, King played a solid defensive game. The senior recorded an impressive 22 total tackles, the most across the state in a single game so far this season. The Coyotes lost to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 36-14 on Sept. 2.

Clete Scherer, Delano. The senior linebacker was all over the Chisago Lakes offense on Aug. 27. Scherer made nine solo tackles and 14 total tackles, including two for a loss. He recorded one sack and forced two fumbles through the game as the Tigers won 27-26.
