Panthers upend Cougars in Lakeville battle

NORTH DOWNS SOUTH FOR SECOND TIME IN SIX DAYS.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- Fourth-ranked Lakeville North and fifth-ranked Lakeville South met for the second time in six days but, even though the match was much closer, the result was the same as North came away with a 25-21, 25-27, 25-18, 29-27 win.

The Panthers never trailed in the openeing set as Abbey Milner snapped a 1-1 tie with a kill and proceeded to serve five consecutive points for a 7-1 lead.

The Cougars could not close the gap to fewer than three points, which they did three times, before the hosts claimed the opening-set win.

South appeared to have the second set well in hand late, holding a 24-21 lead, but Hannah Nietfeld's service helped thwart three set but Ava Moes' seventh kill of the set ended the frame with the teams tied at one set apiece.

The third set saw North side out on nine of its final 10 chances after a block by Ava and Emily Moes had given the Cougars a 10-9 lead.

Abby Jandro served four of the Panthers' final 16 points in the set and added 11 assists during that span.

The fourth set saw three lead changes and 13 tie scores, four of which came in the final nine points of the match.


Ella Thompson hit .474 with a career-high 12 kills.


Bailey Leeke hit .467 and recorded nine kills, including the final two points of the match.

North fought off five set points in that stretch and didn't take their final lead until back-to-back kills by Bailey Leeke broke a 27-27 tie and gave the hosts their 32nd consecutive home win, dating back to Oct. 27, 2016.

The Panthers hit .340, with five players record nine or more kills. They were led by Maddy Hornyak's 23 kills while Ella Thompson added 12, along with a team-high .474 hitting percentage, and Savannah Polzin had 11. Leeke and Milner both added nine kills.

Hornyak recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 digs. Halle Wolfe led both teams with 16 kills and Ella Wheatcraft added 10.

North tallied five total blocks, with Thompson recording four and Polzin two to lead the way.

Jandro was stellar setting, recording a .509 setting percentage along with a season-high 58 assists.

North, now 9-1 on the season and 2-0 in the South Suburban Conference, will go on the road for the first time in conference play in 2019, facing Prior Lake, Tuesday, in  7 p.m. match.
