Panthers open conference play with win over Tigers

North extends home winning streak with victory over Farmington.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. -- Lakeville North opened South Suburban Conference play with a dominant 25-14, 25-12, 25-13 win over Farmington.

Co-champions of the South Suburban Conference in each of the past two seasons, the Panthers extended their home winning streak to 31 matches, covering more than two seasons.

After exchanging the lead with the Tigers early in the match, the Panthers settled in to slowly pull away for the 11-point win in the opening set.

North never trailed in the second set and were never seriously challenged in the third set in winning its ninth match of the season.

Maddy Hornyak paced the Panthers with 15 kills and four aces. She also added eight digs and a block assist while hitting .406.

Four players finished with five or more kills as Abbey Milner had six, and a hitting percentage of .455, while Ella Thompson, who hit .714, and Savannah Polzin both came off the bench to record five kills.

Abby Jandro saw 50 percent of her 66 set attempts get put away for kills, recording 33 assists to go with five digs.

Halle Wolfe had 14 digs to lead both teams, and chipped in with four assists and an ace.

Next up for fourth-ranked North is a home match versus fifth-ranked Lakeville South, Thursday, in a rematch of Saturday's third-place match at the Southwest Minnesota Challenge.


Maddy Hornyak accounted for 19.5 points with 15 kills, four aces and a block assist.
