Minneapolis Washburn vs. Minneapolis Southwest

7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15

Minneapolis Washburn, win or lose, has already clinched this season's Minneapolis City Conference championship.

But that doesn't mean Minneapolis Southwest, which won the league title the past two seasons, doesn't have anything to play for on Tuesday. The Lakers (7-12, 6-2) might have lost their crown, but they still have a shot at the Silver Spoon.

The spoon is a rivalry trophy, originated a few years ago to be given to the winner of the conference's two best teams for most of the past decade. It is made in the likeness of the iconic Spoon Bridge and Cherry at the Walker Art Center, and adds a little spice to this annual contest. The trophy has volleyballs instead of a cherry on either end of a double-sided spoon.

Senior setter Piper Kondes has directed Washburn's offense after first-year coach Jasmine Draper made the switch to a one-setter attack this season. Senior middle hitter Audrey Hepenstal leads the team in blocks and sophomore outside hitter Claire Johnson has been a six-rotation player for the Millers.

Southwest started this season with only three returning varsity players. Senior Hannah Fox leads in kills, junior Bella Walsh leads in digs and junior Addi Gingrich leads in assists. Senior outside hitter Katie Hurcomb is another primary contributor.

Washburn (11-6, 6-0) won a two-set match against Southwest at the Hopkins Invite earlier this season. But Tuesday's matchup determines who takes home bragging rights.
