Minneota vs. Lakeview

7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24

Winning is a habit at Minneota, where the Vikings are rolling opponents despite losing five contributing seniors to graduation from their 2018 Class 1A state championship team.

Winning is a new development at Lakeview, which has steadily improved each of the past three seasons, finishing with regular-season records of 5-16, 8-12 and 14-12, respectively. When the Lakers host Minneota on Tuesday, they have an opportunity to take a giant leap forward.

But it won't be easy, because No. 3-1A Minneota (16-2, 7-0) has made its adjustments and appears to be in a good position to defend its state title.

Two new setters, McKenna Yost and Ireland Stassen, have taken control for the Vikings and coach Hayley Fruin said both have improved greatly since the start of the season. McKenzie Tolk took over as the defensive specialist, Abby Rost moved to middle hitter and, Fruin said, middle hitter Abby Frie "is hitting harder than I've seen her hit. We have high expectations of her, and she isn't disappointing."

Fruin said Lakeview's balanced attack presents a challenge. She praised Lakers right-side hitter LeeAnn Stensrud, middle hitter Savannah Rausch, outside hitter Savanna Louwagie and middle hitter Bradlyn Gniffke for their strong offensive play.

"They're scrappy and always find a way to keep the ball alive," Fruin said of the Lakers (11-1, 6-0).
