Eagan vs. Stillwater
7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 5

Top-ranked Eagan has opened its season in full destruction mode, sweeping both Minneapolis Southwest and Chanhassen in easy fashion. The Wildcats (2-0) are seeking to win their third straight state championship, matching Shakopee's Class 3A run from 2007-09.

While graduating 2016 Miss Volleyball finalist Bre Orr and others from last year's dominant team, Eagan returns another Miss Volleyball candidate in McKenna Melville, and arguably the top freshman in the country, Kennedi Orr, to form a great combination. Add in coach Kathy Gillen, who has done nothing but win over her extended coaching career, and Eagan looks like the clear favorite to three-peat.

Stillwater has strung together back-to-back victories at Tartan and Elk River after falling to No. 5-3A Champlin Park in the Breakdown Sports Side Out Classic to start the fall. The No. 4-3A Ponies (2-1) hope to be one of the top contenders to Eagan and a good showing Tuesday would help. Expect Bob Fisher to rely on 6-foot-3 sophomore Maddie Whittington.
