Shiah Sanders feels her Osseo volleyball team already has seen more than its fair share of adversity this season. Yet, through injuries and other setbacks, the Orioles (13-2) were in a three-way tie for the Northwest Suburban Conference lead heading into Tuesday’s matchup with Blaine, which ended after this edition went to press.

Sanders, a senior captain and outside hitter, is a standout in a league that boasts some tough competition. Still undecided on college next year, Sanders is looking to help her team return to the Class 3A state tournament, where it finished third a year ago.

Here’s a closer look at Sanders:

Q: When did you start playing volleyball?

A: I’ve been playing since third grade. My neighbor and teammate, Andie Carline, played and got me into it. My best friend was playing, so I wanted to do it, too.

Q: How has this season gone so far?

A: It’s been good, really fun. We’ve had some adversity so far, but that’s what the season’s all about. We’ve enjoyed it, but we’ve had injuries, some bad decisions. We’ve had some adversity but people are stepping up.

Q: How does this team compare to last year’s squad?

A: That chemistry is still there, and that’s what I love. We don’t have the all-state girls, and girls have had to step up, and we’ve done that. It seems like we’re really starting to get it going, and hopefully we’ll be able to keep that going.

Q: What do you love about volleyball?

A: I love the passion and intensity and being on the court with my teammates. I love making people happy, and how my teammates make me happy, too.

Q: What’s one word you’d use to describe your team?

A: Just fun. We have a good, competitive time, and it’s a lot of fun. We have such good team chemistry, and we love being out there together.

Q: What’s a word your teammates would use to describe you?

Q: Excitement, or emotion. I’m a pretty emotional player — I’m positive, but I’m emotional. I try to be an emotional leader — not negative or anything, but just trying to keep people in the right frame of mind while we’re on the court.

Q: Do you have any pre-match rituals?

A: Personally? Not really, but as a team, we’ve decided to make a rap for the Osseo volleyball team. It’s still in progress, but that’ll be a new ritual for us.

Q: What’s the best movie you’ve seen in the last few months?

A: I’d have to say the Lego Movie. It was so cute. I just loved it.

Q: Any plans yet for next year?

A: I’m really trying to play college volleyball. I’m looking at South Dakota State, where my sister is, and I’d probably have to walk on there. But I’m still looking at some opportunities.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about high school sports?

A: At Osseo, it’s just the spirit. Everyone comes out to events, and it’s just the loudest. I love the energy in the air, and the sportsmanship.

Q: In 10 years, you’ll be …

A: I’m not sure. If it were my dream, I would love to be an interior designer.
