Lakeville North’s Alyssa Goehner soars at the net, but her all-around volleyball skills truly set her apart.

Lakeville North's Alyssa Goehner used her 35-inch vertical jump to collect a metro-high 630 kills this year. "She's one of the all-time best high school players,'' Hopkins coach Vicki Swenson said.

There’s no coasting for Alyssa Goehner. No resting on her impressive accomplishments or sitting back, enjoying the view from the top.

Life seems to find the Lakeville North senior, who navigates her world on the strength of remarkable athletic talents, a drive to use them whenever possible and a personality that naturally embraces others.

It’s impossible to feel ambivalent about Goehner, the Star Tribune 2013 Metro Player of the Year. She won’t let you.

“I can’t sit still,” said Goehner in what is clearly an understatement. “I always need to be doing something. If someone comes up to me, I’ll talk to them. I’m an open person.”

Carving her own path has come as naturally as breathing.

“She’s always been that way,” said her mother, Janis. “Before she was even 1 year old, I’d put her in one of those bouncy swings and she would swing herself. What kid can do that before they’re even a year old?”

On the volleyball court, the 5-11 Goehner has a vertical jump measured at 35 inches. She has a metro-leading 630 kills this season. An intuitive defender, she often took dual roles for the Panthers: Dig out a serve, then rotate to her preferred position on the right side for a return set and a chance at a kill.

“She’s one of the all-time best high school players,” said Hopkins coach Vicki Swenson, whose daughter, Samantha, is among the nation’s top high school setters and a good friend of Goehner’s. “There’s no weakness to her game.”

Goehner’s abilities might only be surpassed by her reputation. With awareness of her volleyball prowess fueled by social media, she is easily the most high-profile volleyball player the state has produced.

• Lakeville North won two Class 3A championships by featuring Goehner (2010 and 2012).

• She led her Northern Lights club volleyball team (“Every single one of them are my best friends,” she said) to a U.S. Junior Olympic national title in 2012. The team finished third in 2013; Goehner played with a nasty case of salmonella poisoning but still earned All-America honors.

• Not long after recovering, Goehner was selected to fill in on a U.S. National Junior Team playing in an international tournament in Croatia. Despite being a last-minute addition, Goehner was the only American named to the all-tournament team.

• She has more than 1,100 Twitter followers and counts Apple Valley basketball star Tyus Jones as her boyfriend of about a year.

“We hit it off because we’ve gone through the same things,” Goehner said. “He’s me in guy form in basketball, and I’m him in volleyball. We’ve had the same experiences.”

Goehner’s high school career is over after a loss to Eagan in Saturday’s section final, but she’s ready to move on to her next volleyball adventure. She has one season with Northern Lights before she heads off to play college volleyball at Marquette. The Gophers showed interest, but it was Marquette that won Goehner’s heart.

“Their coach [Bond Shymansky] really wanted me there. He’s been fighting for me since the seventh grade,” she said. “They believe in me, and that’s the best feeling in the world.”
