With the first week of volleyball playoffs in the books, it’s obvious that Edina pulled off the most surprising upset so far.

The Hornets finished at the bottom of the Lake Conference with just one league victory, but they rebounded Thursday in the Section 6, 3A quarterfinals, upsetting No. 3-seeded Hopkins, which had defeated them in straight sets twice during the regular season. The scores were 25-23, 11-25, 28-30, 25-15, 15-12.

“I’ve known for a long time that we’re a good team but it was just a matter of getting over the hump,” coach Stephanie Chapek said. “We got killed in the [second] game 25-11, but I was very proud of them for keeping their head and having the confidence to believe they can beat anyone.”

The Hornets had little time to revel in their victory, however. They played No. 2-seed Eden Prairie Tuesday night, a team they had split with during the regular season.

Win or lose, Chapek said, the victory over Hopkins should be a steppingstone to a brighter future.

“This is huge for our program, all the way down through the youth kids,” she said. “It seems like volleyball is growing and this will really help.”

Trojans runners top both polls

Wayzata finished as the No. 1-ranked cross-country team in both boys and girls’ state coaches association Class 2A rankings after winning the Section 6 meets last week. The girls, led by winner Anna French, took four of the top five spots in the race. The boys won behind a first-place finish from junior Connor Olson.
