Preview

These are teams that lost some fairly significant portions of their line-up but still bring back enough to make their teams highly competitive.

Hudson lost three of their top five scorers from a year ago including two of their top three.  With that said battling four man Alex Herink returns as an upperclassmen ready to do battle with whatever is put in front of him.  Washburn is coming off a second place at state finish and will be lead by speedy point guard Nick Anderson.

Washburn will be one of the better defensive clubs with Quinton Garvis, Jeff Jones, and Noah Scarver all ready to step up and harass.

Key Matchup

Ethan Stanchik vs Nick Anderson: Ethan is Hudson’s top returning guard and he’ll have his work cut out for him trying to chase around the speedy Anderson.  They two play different style games but they will control the pace for their teams.  Anderson’s ability to see the floor and drop in picture perfect assists makes him one of the state’s best PGs.

Prediction

Why Washburn will win:

  • The Millers have way more speed than their opponents with Anderson, Jones, Scarver, and the rest of the returning talent.  Scarver and Jones are also D1 football players who are physical as well.
  • Washburn has something to prove.  They saw several of their top players graduate, their Head Coach left for another program, and they saw teammates transfer.  This is a motivated team that wants to show that they can still hang with the best in the state.

Why Hudson will win:

  • Alex Herink is a beast.  The 6-foot-6 Hudson forward has already accumulated division one offers after his relentless efforts playing with the Minnesota Pump N run this summer.  Washburn will have guys ready to go at him but he’s still going to get double double numbers.
  • Hudson wins if they can handle Washburn’s early harassment and pressure and then play a disciplined defensive games themselves.  The Millers will be an active club but if forced to play halfcourt offense early in the year there could be struggles.  They have a new coach and most of their points per game from last year are gone so if Hudson plays good team defense they can win.

Our Prediction:  Hudson
