Winona at Rochester Mayo
7:15 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23

Rochester Mayo returned 10 players from last year’s state Class 3A consolation championship team, and the experience has helped the Spartans rise to the top of the Big 9 Conference, winning 12 of their first 15 matches this season.

The Spartans won seven of their last eight matches with the only loss come to Sioux Falls O’Gorman (S.D.) two weeks ago. Rochester Mayo has not dropped a match to an in-state rival since losing 2-0 on Sept. 6 to Eagan, No. 4 in Class 3A. Spartans senior setter Nora Holton and sophomore libero Kate Holtan are one of the state's top sister acts.

Winona has one loss in four Big 9 Conference matches and could shake up the circuit with an upset at Rochester Mayo Tuesday night. The Winhawks have a young team led by sophomores Maria Appicelli and Katie Block.
